Copal is a pre-amber (young amber). It is almost completely polymerized (+/- 65% towards fossilization).

Copal is a fossil resin produced by a conifer tree. These trees exuded resin to heal injuries sustained from the destructive forces of nature (like high winds, animals and insects). Typically, branches would break or insects would bore into the bark of the tree, exposing the phloem portion of the tree which transports the resin. The resin would flow from the damaged part of the tree in large globs ("icicles"). These globs would eventually fall from the tree or down its sides and onto the ground. In the process it would entrap, insects, air pockets, water droplets, leaves and other debris along the way.
