This fossil filled agate is called by several different names. The most common name is Turritella agate. Another fairly descriptive name is rattlesnake agate. The snail fossil in the agate is actually not a Turritella snail. Its species name is goniobasis.
This is really nice material for individuals at all lapidary skill levels. Since it is agate, it is a seven in hardness. That makes it useful as a stone for anything which will be exposed to a moderate level of abuse, like rings and bracelets.
Additionally, with some stones you have to be careful how you orient the stone when cutting so that you get an optimum design or color. With Turritella agate there is almost no wrong way to cut it. Except possibly diagonally, and even that might yield some interesting results. To see what this material typically looks like cut and polished go back to the "Fossils" page and view the photo for the "Other" category.
We sell this agate by the pound. Orders will be filled with the largest piece available and smaller pieces will be added to meet the ordered amount.
