Bivalves - France

Mammuthus (mammoth) was smaller than an African elephant. They first appeared in the African Pleistocene and quickly spread throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The teeth of mammoths consist of a series of plates made up of enamel surrounding a dentine core. The plates are held together in a matrix of dental cement. Each tooth plate erupted from the back of the jaw and slowly moved forward as the foreward plates wore down to be replaced by the ones behind. The thickness and number of tooth plates are important criteria in identification.

Based on their teeth it is thought that mammoths grazed on grasses and low shrubs. Given the shape of this specimen it is likely from the lower left jaw of a mammoth.

This specimen is from a private collection and is not available for sale!
