Reptiles evolved from amphibians approximately 310 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian Period. Unlike their amphibian ancestors, reptiles were able to spend their entire lives on land due to an impermeable skin and durable, leathery eggshells. Reptiles were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates during the Mesozoic Era and gave rise to birds and mammals during that time.
