Bivalves - France

Trilobites occurred from the Cambrian through Devonian Periods (570-345 million years ago). They are important because specific varieties will only be found in certain layers or strata of rock and can therefore be used to date other fossils found in those same layers. The trilobite is divided into three sections: the head or cephalon, the body or thorax, and the tail or pygidium. The thorax and pygidium are further divided side to side by three lobes that run along the lenght of the body. This is where the common name tri-lobe-ite comes from.

Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Arthropoda, Class: Trilobita, Order: Ptychoparida, Family: Ptychoparidae, Genus: Elrathia, Species: kingii.
