The brachial, or top, side of the Atrypa brachiopod is more rounded that the pedicle, or bottom, side. The point, or umbo, on the pedicle side contains a small hole through which the pedicle extends for it to attach to the sea bed. The ornamentation of the shell is made up of finely rounded ribs and prominent, concentric growth lines, which form frills on both sides of the shell. It lived during the Silurian Period (440-400 million years ago).
