The specimen is ruby in zoisite and is from India. Ruby is red corundum which has a hardness of 9 on Moh's scale of hardness. The zoisite is softer, probably somewhere around 5 or 6. Since the purpose of these specimens is generally for fluorescent display, most of the specimens are cut thinner than slabs would normally be cut if they were to be used for making cabs. Thinner cuts allow us to show more of the corundum crystals, which would otherwise be lost inside the matrix. A few of the slabs were cut thick enough for cabbing and will be so noted in the stat's under the image below.
The first image was taken under long wave ultraviolet light. The corundum fluoresces a nice cherry red under long wave and a dull weak cherry red under short wave. Due to the weakness of the short wave image we elected not to include a short wave image on the site for these specimens.
The image below was taken under normal lighting. The specimen is shown as cut. I am not certain how well the zoisite will take a polish. Since the ruby is a 9 in hardness, it should polish well.
