In some circles they are known as "viewing stones", "viewing minerals", "suiseki", "Chineses scholar's stones", or just "scholar's stones." The hobby of collecting stones which remind us of objects or scenes is most widely practiced by Asian cultures, but is catching on here in the US by all cultures. Collecting stones which remind us of things has been done for thousands of years. The earliest examples would probably have been used as talismans (objects used to evoke certain powers).
We will try to have as much fun as possible with these chalcedony roses. Since they form in many different shapes, it is fun to look for shapes that remind us of things other than just another pretty rock. The fluorescent lighting helps to bring out these shapes.
