Cyanophyta/bacter, also known as blue-green algae/bacteria formed in narrow bands of light and dark coloring. The light coloring is due to calcite and magnesium which was deposited in the external mucal layer of the algae/bacteria. The dark layer is the result of particles precipitated out of sediment which were trapped between the algal filiments.

This is the same algae/bacteria which formed stromatolites. Stromatolites range from the Precambrian to recent times (4-5 billion years ago to present).

These specimens are sold in lots of 100 pieces for $10.00.
