The South Dakota Badlands Oligocene environment was greatly different than what we see today. It would have been relatively flat with wandering rivers dotted with lakes and swamps. The land areas would have been covered with low vegetation and occasional forests. The area was home to turtles, crocodiles, rhinos, dogs, tiger-like cats, titanotheres, gophers, squirrels, hedgehogs, moles, pigs, deer, tapers, camels, rabbits, horses, oreodonts, and birds.
